abstract = "Biomass and carbon stocks quantifications in natural plant cover
is a key element in researches about nutrient cycling and the role
of forests in the climate. In Brazil, not all formations were
properly studied, as the Cerrado and its existing forms in the
northern region of Minas Gerais, and the forest measurements
traditional methods do contribute hardly anything, for being
expensive and have a limited spatial application. As a solution,
the utilization of remote sensing associated with traditional
methods have been obtaining succes and making itself as a
promising alternative. Therefore, the objective of the present
work was to evaluate the relationship between spectral response,
biomass an carbon stock in Cerrado formations in the northern
region of Rio Pardo watershed. The methodology consisted in forest
inventory and measurement campaigns for estimating biomass and
carbon stock, digital processing of orbital images and computer
spreadsheets, for the generation of vegetation index and the
building of models of the variables factors involved according to
NDVI. It was noted strong relation between NDVI and biomass and
carbon stocks, the adjustment of the tested models was considered
satisfactory, with R² of 0,8168 for biomass and 0,8215 for carbon.
It was observed that most parts of the studied area was with low
stocks of the studied variables, showing the environmental
problems of the region and indicating the generation of carbon
credits opportunities through forestry projects.",
